Windows Defender wont start

Last night I found that Windows Defender wont run/start. Googled and found a solution that worked.

I have some entries in the hosts file that enables me to connect to my development web sites on my office server, which I connect using VPN.

After reading XRYANX, I commented out those entries in the hosts file and Defender started working!!

I dont understand why this stupid Defender is looking at the hosts file, whereas its supposed to scan my computer :(
